What is a visual identity?

Your visual identity or visual language is a collection of visual devices that communicate your brand.  It is more than just a logo placed in your blog’s header. These visual cues may include your use of imagery, fonts, textures, patterns, color and logo.

A cohesive visual identity design across social media platforms (and other digital and printed collateral) increases audience awareness and recognition of your brand.

The key to successfully implement your visual identity system is consistency.

Try to put your social media graphics side by side. Do they look like they came from a single brand?

Stand out in a sea of Tweets

So, you’ve decided to create a Twitter account for your blog, business or personal brand. You are ready to connect with your audience,  grow your following, and takeover Twitterverse. But WAIT! Does your Twitter account effectively communicate your brand? If you’re not sure, then consider reviewing these aspects of your Twitter account:

1. Username a.k.a Twitter handle
Your @username is your unique identifier. Use your brand name or a name that represents who you are or what you do in 15 characters or less.

2. Bio
Tell your story or describe your brand in 160 characters or less.

3. URL
Make sure you add the link to your blog or website.

4. Profile photo
Either use your brand’s logo or your headshot. For bloggers and entrepreneurs, you can use a headshot. It just feels right to see that there’s a real human behind the tweets 😉 The profile photo image size for Twitter is 400×400 pixels.

5. Header image
You can use the header image to feature your products, services, promos or an ongoing blog giveaway. Twitter recommends the header image size to be 1500×500 pixels. On mobile, it is cropped to a 2:1 aspect ratio.

6. Link and button color (theme color)
Use the primary color of your color palette. If it’s too light or too bright to use as a button and link color, choose a darker shade. To change your account’s theme color, go to Settings> Design> Theme Color and put the hex code. You can convert your RGB / CMYK colors to hex here.

7. Pinned tweet
Like the header image, you can take advantage of this feature to maximize the exposure your promo or announcement. The pinned tweet is like a sticky post. It will stay at the top of your profile timeline, above your other tweets.

8. Images
Twitter automatically scales uploaded photos to a 2:1 ratio. Crop your images to a 2:1 ratio (ex. 1024x512px , 440x200px, 880×440px) if you want to make sure that the important parts of the image are not cut off in the in-stream preview.

If you put your website URL or watermark on the bottom right corner of timeline images, avoid moving it to other areas. But of course this is not carved in stone, what’s important is that the images you share have your blog URL or Twitter handle.  Photos get shared a lot and you’ll want readers or potential customers to trace their steps back to you.

Integrate your visual identity to the images you share. If your decide to use bright, crisp and close-up shots, stick to it and avoid changing your imagery style to subtle colors and soft-focus. It’s a good practice to create a template for your offers, tips, quotes and other campaigns. It saves you time and ensures a consistent look and feel.

Use the same font combination for text overlays, don’t switch to whatever font you fancy.

Consistency is the key.
